Hawaii Golf -3The fall and winter months in the northeast and even the south are cramping my style with golf. I try to play golf all year around whenever possible but this year is nearly impossible to play between the snow and the severe tempertures we are experiencing as of late. I have a good mind to plan a trip and lug my golf clubs down south but from what I’ve seen the weather is not much better there. It’s been so cold on the east coast, even in the south, that the lizards are falling off the palm trees and dying in areas where they usually thrive in the tropic climates in Florida, Georgia and the other southern states.

I have an excellent suggestion. Hawaii is always a good place for golf so why not pack up our bags and get away for a few days? Well for one thing the cost is top dollar and it is not easy to get the time off from work. Other than that what is standing in our way? It’ nice to dream isn’t it? Hopefully some good weather is around the corner and we will be able to take out our golf clubs and hit the links soon. While we may not be able to play in Hawaii right now I am making it my goal to be there for my 60th birthday in a couple of years. How about joining me on the links in Hawaii in 2012? 41VyS0TezXL__SL125_Golf clubs for juniors and new golfers are now readily available and reasonable priced. When I first introduced my son to the game of golf I did not want to spend a lot of money on golf clubs or golf equipment. The main reason for my reservation about the expense is because I was not sure if he would like golf, period.

I bought him a starter set and took him to the driving range from time to time to try and determine if he would stick with the game or put the clubs in a corner and not touch them for weeks at a time. As it turns out he enjoys golf and he asked for an upgrade in his clubs and equipment as soon as he got a bit older. It is important to allow your child or any new golfer an opportunity to play and enjoy this sport for there is no other like it. Happy Golfing to All!

Par for the Course

13 January; Author: mikedeagle

Par is the amount of strokes designated to be required for a particular golf hole. Most regulation golf courses are designed to include par three’s, par fours and par fives and the total strokes allowed for 18 holes is usually 72. These golf courses normally consist of four par threes, ten par fours and four par fives. There are also par sixes on some courses such as Farmstead, which is located in both North and South Carolina. The hole plays from approximately 760 yards from the championship tees. It may take more than a few golf balls to reach this green as it is guarded by water on the left hand side.

During one golf round I just missed an eagle 4 by two inches with a putt from the fringe of the green and played from the 716 yard tee location. I made the tap in birdie but the hole in one and double eagle still eludes me. There are also par 70 and 71 courses and they can consist of a combination of the above referenced par holes. Making a Par is an accomplishment on any golf hole. Strive for your pars and the birdies will follow. Happy Golfing to All!

Driver - GThe drive is a critical shot in golf and creates momentum for the rest of the hole and the entire golf round. Keeping the golf ball in play is a necessity if you want to score well. It is important to use a driver which is right for you and golf equipment that you feel comfortable with.

There are many golf drivers on the market but I use a Taylor Made Burner model with a stiff flex and 10.5 degree loft. Taylor Made is well known through out the golf  world as a top name brand which many of the best professionals use. I would recommend the new golfer use a regular flex and at least 9 degree loft when first starting to play golf.  Happy Golfing to All!

Where is Tiger Woods?

7 January; Author: mikedeagle

Where is Tiger Woods? That is the question most fans are asking about the premier golfer in the  world. The rumors are swirling about his present location. Is he in a secluded hipga_g_tiger01_412deaway in Africa, in Florida near his home, or maybe on Long Island at a friends estate who is offering him refuge from the media circus surrounding him as of late.

It is surreal that this situation has occurred to a person of his stature and notoriety. But it only goes to show you that we are all human and anyone is subject to the frailties of humankind. I hope wherever he may be hiding out he is with golf clubs in hand and hitting golf balls to prepare for the season ahead. Good luck Tiger and Happy Golfing to All!

Putt Like Phil

6 January; Author: mikedeagle

Putt-Like-Phil-1-04-10Phil Mickelson was the second premier golfer in the world a few short months ago behind who else but Tiger Woods. A putting tip from Dave Stockton in September virtually elevated his game overnight. His old putting method overlapped the index finger of his lead hand over the knuckles of his trail hand as many golfers do. But according to Stockton, the straight finger creates tension all the way up your lead arm. Stockton alleviated the tension by adding a crook or a bend in the overlapping finger. It now gives it more of a trigger look like Phil is firing a weapon as he putts.

A good putter is an excellent weapon in golf as more than half of a golfers score is made on the putting green. Most good putters spend some time on this invaluable part of the game as it is important to limit the three putts and maybe even make few one putts during a golf round. Besides relieving the tension in Phil’s stroke Dave emphasized the importance of the follow thru when putting. Stay with the putt as long as possible because the longer the ball stays on the clubface the more accurate it will go toward your target line as long as you DO NOT LOOK UP! Happy Golfing to All!

Two very important, but sometimes taken for granted pieces of  golf apparel are golf shoes and gloves. Golf shoes provide the basis for a solid stance which is critical for a good set up routine. As many of you know golf is a game whereby success is determined by fractions of inches. Any advantage that can be gained by adding golf gloves or golf shoes to your equipment is well worth the investment.

Golf shoes allow you to attain the traction you need during the golf swing. Just as the club has a tendency to turn in your hand as you swing, your feet will have a tendency to move off line if not set properly before you swing the golf club. Also as with golf gloves their are various manufacturers of quality golf shoes such as Footjoy, Etonic, Callaway, Nike and Addidas to name a few. If you have not played with golf shoes yet and want to improve your game, treat yourself to a pair and you will realize the difference in your new improved swing stability. This will translate into saved shots and better scores so steady your stance and get a pair of golf shoes. Happy Golfing to All!

Footjoy Golf GloveAlthough not a necessity, a golf glove is an important accessory to take advantage of to help your game. The grip is a critical part of the set up and preparing to hit the golf ball. It is a natural tendency for the golf club to turn in your hands as you swing if it is not held properly. When I first started playing golf I never wanted to use a glove as I thought it felt more comfortable without one. After a while watching other better players and also almost every golf professional using a glove when they played golf I thought there must be some advantage to wearing one.

One day I decided to try out a glove and purchased a Footjoy Leather Model. Footjoy was a known brand at the time and very popular for their golf shoes and gloves. Wearing a golf glove felt uncomfortable at first, but once I got used to the feel I would never play without one again. It allowed me to grip and hold the club with more confidence as the grip felt like it locked  in when I used a glove. As with golf balls and clubs there are many different brand names of golf gloves for sale. The manufacturers of golf clubs and balls such as Titleist, Callaway, Taylor Made, Ping, Top Flite, Orlimar, Wilson and the like all carry a full line of golf gloves. I have tried many golf gloves by most of the names noted but Footjoy is still my glove of choice. Be sure to try a golf glove next time you play and you may be in for a pleasant surprise. Remember to Get a Grip and Happy Golfing to All!

As noted in a previous post there are many different manufacturers and brand names of golf balls. This can make it tough to choose one especially for the new golfer. I have  been playing golf for over 30 years I can attest from my own experience that Titleist is my golf ball of choice. Titleist has different grades of golf balls that range of prices from $19.99 for their moderately priced balls to around $45.99 for the Pro V1 and Pro V1x, which is the golf ball I use when I want to achieve maximum distance and control.

I also play some other golf ball brands periodically but keep returning to Titleist when I need that extra few yards on any particular golf hole. If you are a beginning golfer it will take a while to see which golf ball will work better for you. Some other brands which I feel also perform very well are Callaway, Taylor Made and Bridgestone. These brands also have  price ranges in proportion to the performance characteristics that the golf balls will provide. Happy Golfing to All!

Golf Blog Photos - RachelRumors are swirling that Tiger Woods has been seen with Rachel Uchitel over the holidays. Can it be that Tiger is serious about his relationship with her and what is the status of his relationship with Elin? Can it be his four year marriage to Elin, resulting in two children, is over? We can only speculate what the future holds for the supertar of the modern era of golf.

There is also the possibilty that Rachel is with child if you believe the latest tabloid predictions. If his turns out to be true Tiger will no doubt be locked into another relationship whether it is of his choosing or not. I’ve said it before and I’ll reiterate it now, Tiger would be better off hitting golf balls and returning to the game he loves as soon as possible. It appears his rise to superstardom over the last dozen years or so was too much for him to handle as he let these women dictate his path instead of the other way around. If he wanted this lifestyle, it would have been OK had he not gotten married to Elin and had two children with her. It is now 2010 so let’s see what the future holds for Tiger. We can only wait and see. Happy Golfing to All!
