golf driveIt’s often said that golfers “drive for show and putt for dough.” This expression is meant to convey that putting is the real key to success on the course, but it isn’t necessarily true. On the PGA Tour, the best pros are the ones who consistently hit fairways and greens in regulation. While it’s undoubtedly important, great putting will get you nowhere if you’re already lying five by the time you reach the green.

There’s only one place that’s appropriate for learning how to drive a golf ball, and that’s the driving range. Avid players perfect their swings on the range long before walking over to the first tee. It’s the equivalent of a concert pianist putting in hours of rehearsal time. By the time you get to the first tee, you’ll be relying mostly on muscle memory. That will allow you to take your mind off the swing itself and focus on distance control and wind conditions.
