Golf Balls – How to Choose a Ball

21 November; Author: mikedeagle

As you know there are many different brands and manufacturer’s of golf balls. Some are advertised as having different performance characteristics like height to distance ratios. Some will fly higher and some will go farther but they will all work on the golf course, especially for the beginning golfer. There are also different compression golf balls, 80, 90 and 100 respectively. The compression of the ball is directly proportionate to the swing speed and force of impact on the golf ball. The lower compression 80 balls allow for maximum performance for a golfer with a slower swing speed and is usually used by women, older players and new golfers who have not yet acquired the techniques to swing like a golf professional. The 90 and 100  are used by the better players ands golf professionals respectively. The golf pro swing speed of apporoximately 105 to 130 mph allows the maximum compression and thus attains the greatest distance possible for that particular ball.

So don’t get hung up on compression or performance data when first learning to play. Purchase a ball that will fit your budget as you will have a tendency to lose more balls when first learning to play. Some golf balls like Titleist Pro V and Pro V1 can cost about $45 t0 $50 per dozen as opposed to Pinnacle, Top Flite or Titleist’s more economically priced line and therefore save you some money as you learn to play. As you progress with your game and develop your swing skills you can upgrade to a better performance ball. The benefit to be derived from using the more expensive balls initially will be negligible so use a golf ball that fits your budget. Happy Golfing to All!
