Tom Watson Gets Lei’d After Victory at Mitsubishi in Hawaii!
Two of my favorite all time golfers, Tom Watson and Fred Couples, were battling down the stretch in the Mitsubishi Electric Championship on January 24th. On the 18th hole one “Helluva Golfer”, Tom Watson outlasted Fred Couples and was victorious in the end. He claimed his victory in style with consecutive birdies on the last two holes. He won by a shot over Fred Couples at Hualalai, Hawaii, a perfect venue for this remarkable win.
The old man at 60 beat the young buck at 50 years young to keep his streak going strong. Having just come off a skins victory, after partnering with Jack Nicklaus a few weeks back and his incredible run at a 6th British Open title last year against Stewart Cink, Tom Watson may be playing some of the best golf of his illustrious career. He can still hit golf balls with the best of them and I wouldn’t be surprised if there was another major in his future. Can’t wait to see what this season holds for him. Happy Golfing to All!
Par is the amount of strokes designated to be required for a particular golf hole. Most regulation golf courses are designed to include par three’s, par fours and par fives and the total strokes allowed for 18 holes is usually 72. These golf courses normally consist of four par threes, ten par fours and four par fives. There are also par sixes on some courses such as Farmstead, which is located in both North and South Carolina. The hole plays from approximately 760 yards from the championship tees. It may take more than a few golf balls to reach this green as it is guarded by water on the left hand side.
During one golf round I just missed an eagle 4 by two inches with a putt from the fringe of the green and played from the 716 yard tee location. I made the tap in birdie but the hole in one and double eagle still eludes me. There are also par 70 and 71 courses and they can consist of a combination of the above referenced par holes. Making a Par is an accomplishment on any golf hole. Strive for your pars and the birdies will follow. Happy Golfing to All!
As noted in a previous post there are many different manufacturers and brand names of golf balls. This can make it tough to choose one especially for the new golfer. I have been playing golf for over 30 years I can attest from my own experience that Titleist is my golf ball of choice. Titleist has different grades of golf balls that range of prices from $19.99 for their moderately priced balls to around $45.99 for the Pro V1 and Pro V1x, which is the golf ball I use when I want to achieve maximum distance and control.
I also play some other golf ball brands periodically but keep returning to Titleist when I need that extra few yards on any particular golf hole. If you are a beginning golfer it will take a while to see which golf ball will work better for you. Some other brands which I feel also perform very well are Callaway, Taylor Made and Bridgestone. These brands also have price ranges in proportion to the performance characteristics that the golf balls will provide. Happy Golfing to All!
The latest development in the Tiger Woods saga was noted in Star Magazine this past week. There is a possibility that Rachel Uchitel, one of the young women Tiger had a fling with, is pregnant. There are also claims that they have both expressed their love for one another but was that in the heat of the moment or is it truly how they feel? Either way, if this rumor turns out to be true, Tiger’s return to golf could be delayed indefinitely and any hope for a reconciliation with Elin will surely be unlikely in the future.
So what is the world’s premier golfer to do? Hopefully the pregnancy rumor will turn out to be just that and Tiger will be able to commence on the road back to rebuilding his image, his career, making amends with the PGA, his sponsors, his family and friends and concentrating once again on his golf game. Getting out on the links and hitting golf balls will be the best medicine for Tiger right now. I wish him the best on his journey back for as I’ve stated previously he will be sorely missed by his fans and the golfing community until he returns to the game he loves, golf!
I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season for New Year’s will arrive in just a few days with more good things to come in 2010. Happy Golfing to All!
A good workout at the driving range is a usually a good idea especially if you want to progress with your golf game. It is a place where you can work on your swing faults, or a particular problem with your game without penalty. Going to the range can also be detrimental to your game if you do not have a game plan in mind when hitting golf balls there. When I have the time I always try to work on my game and hit golf balls to strengthen the golf muscles and promote muscle memory to hone a repetitive swing. But I always have an agenda of what I would like to accomplish with my time there. Whether it be to work on my driving, woods, irons or pitch shots I try to focus on the particular shot that provides the greatest obstacle to my scoring well.
Driving the golf ball well is a must for a good scoring game. It doesn’t do you much good to hit great iron shots or putt well if your tee shot with the driver is short, in the trees or out of bounds. I spend the most time on mastering a good drive because I feel it sets the tone for how you will play the rest of the hole. Pitch shots to various targets from distances of 50 to 120 yards is also another valuable shot to have in your bag. I can spend an entire session at the range working on either one of these important aspects of a golfers game. Another important stroke, which is critical to master, if you want to score well is putting. More than half the strokes of a golfers score are taken on the green with the putter, which I will discuss further in a future post. But being a good putter does not help a golfers score if he already lies 5 or 6 by the time he reaches the green so, as noted previously, it is important to spend the time honing the various aspects of your game at the range whenever possible.
Summary
1) It is always a good idea to loosen up before hitting golf balls by stretching the legs, back and arms so to prevent injury. Take a club or two and slowly simulate the motion of the swing for a few minutes before actually swinging at full speed. There are also weighted clubs sold in most golf sporting goods stores which can be purchased specifically for this purpose.
2) Try to schedule a session at the driving range whenever possible to work on the various shots which you may be having the most difficulty with or just to keep the golf muscles loose and strong.
3) Have a game plan and concentrate on the aspect of your game that needs the most work, whether it be the drive, long irons, woods, pitching or lob wedge shots, etc.
4) Take the time to line yourself up to your intended target and try to get as close as possible to that spot.
5) Make sure to rehearse proper grip, set up and pre-shot routine for each shot to simulate the conditions on the course as closely as possible.
6) Try to locate a real grass driving range as this will better simulate actual course conditions.
Make sure to have fun and Happy Golfing to All!
